How to review a collectible Yixing teapot listing
A high asking price, a famous name on the base, or a certificate alone cannot settle a teapot's history. Use the complete record to decide what you know, what is a seller's description, and what still needs independent examination.
See the whole object
Look for clear views of the body, lid, spout, handle, base, interior, and filter. Measurements and capacity help you judge scale. Ask for a handling video when the way the lid fits or the pour matters to you.
Inspect condition closely
Review close-ups for chips, repairs, wear, and differences in color under varied light. Photographs can show details, but they cannot replace examination in hand.
Separate a mark from attribution
Read a seal or inscription as part of the object's record. A mark bearing an artist's name does not by itself establish that the artist made the pot. Compare the listing's wording with its supporting evidence.
Check supporting documents
Review any box, certificate, acquisition history, and dated materials together. Note who issued each document, what object it identifies, and whether its details match the pot shown.
Know the purchase terms
Confirm the current price, shipping, return terms, and checkout protection on the live seller listing. For a significant purchase, request answers to unresolved questions before paying.
Keep uncertainty visible
Collectors may value form, craftsmanship, documented history, and personal response differently. If provenance or age is central to the price, seek independent specialist review rather than relying on promotional language.
